The First ASPN Green Port Awarding Ceremony was Held in Penang, Malaysia

 The First ASPN Green Ports Awarding Ceremony was held in Penang, Malaysia on November 8th, 2016. The APSN Green Port was presented to Bangkok Port, Thailand; Jurong Port, Singapore; Ningbo Zhoushan Port Co., Ltd. Beilun Second Container Terminal Branch, China; Port Klang, Malaysia; Port of Singapore; Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia; and Qinhuangdao Port Co., Ltd. Sixth Port Branch, China.

Datuk Ab Aziz Bin Kaprawi, Deputy Minister of Transport Malaysia, Dato’ Abdullah Yusuff Basiron, Undersecretary, Maritime Division, Ministry of Transport Malaysia (First Vice President of APSN); and Mr. Fei Weijun, Secretary General of the APSN were invited to present the APSN Green Port Award to the honorable Ports to encourage their efforts and achievements on the development of Green Port.


The first APSN Green Port Award goes to Bangkok Port from the economy of Thailand. Bangkok Port is one of Thailand’s main international ports that is operated by the Port Authority of Thailand. It is differentiated because of its effective Environment Management Framework and policies as well as lots of green initiatives conducted by PAT, such as the wastewater treatment project, the Green and Clean Port Project and the solid waste management project.


The second APSN Green Port Award goes to Jurong Port from the economy of Singapore. Jurong Port Private Limited is a port operator headquartered in Singapore, which operates the only multi-purpose port in Singapore, handles bulk, break bulk and containerized cargo. Our Evaluation Committee appreciated Jurong Port for its culture of environmental sustainability, its use of building management system, its Green Mark certifications and its extraordinary achievements on energy conservation.


The third APSN Green Port Award goes to Beilun Second Container Terminal Branch of Ningbo Port Company Limited from the economy of China. Ningbo-Zhoushan Port ranks No. 4 in the world in terms of container volume and this container terminal operator puts the green development concept into its daily operation and management. It is the first container terminal in China to drive RTG with electricity instead of diesel fuel. Moreover clean and renewable energies, as well as various energy saving technologies are widely used by it. The company is one of the first batch of 4-star China Green Ports.


The fourth APSN Green Port Award goes to Port Klang from the economy of Malaysia. Port Klang contains three ports, namely Northport, South point and Westport, and all of them are administered by the Port Klang Authority. The Evaluation Committee stated that the Port Klang Authority has adopted statutory requirements in compliance not only with the Malaysian environmental regulations, but also with the international standards and laws. The effective and incentive management of PKA has facilitated lots of green initiatives, such as the air quality management and the adoption of energy saving technologies on RTGs.


The fifth APSN Green Port Award goes to Port of Singapore from the economy of Singapore. Port of Singapore is a leading global hub port and a top international maritime centre. It is managed and regulated by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. It is found by our Evaluation Committee that MPA plays an important role in the coordination between the environmental and social activities within the operations of the business. Under the guide of MPA, numerous green initiatives have been jointly developed with its industry partners and customers. As a result, MPA won the Singapore Sustainability Awards 2015 and the 2015 Singapore Environmental Achievements Awards.


The sixth APSN Green Port Award goes to Port of Tanjung Pelepas from the economy of Malaysia. Port of Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd, a Member of MMC Group, is operating the Port of Tanjung Pelepas located in Johor Bahru District, Malaysia. Beginning its official operations in January 2000, this container port is very young but growing very fast. Along its short history, the port followed the Johor Port Authority Green Port Policy and ingrained the sustainable development into its culture. It has done excellent jobs for its carbon print reduction, waste management and environmental management. It won the 2012 Frost & Sullivan Asia-Pacific “Green Terminal Operator of the Year”.


The seventh APSN Green Port Award, which is also the last one for 2016, goes to the Sixth Port Branch of Qinhuangdao Port Company Limited from the economy of China. Qinhuangdao Port is the largest port in terms of coal transportation around the world and the Sixth Port Branch of Qinhuangdao Port Company Limited operates the Sixth Port Brach Terminal located in the East Port Area of Qinhuangdao Port. The company always puts forward the goal of green, harmonious and sustainable development. It has complete most of the main tasks on the green port construction, including the adoption of energy-saving technologies and facilities, raising the level of clean production and the integrated management of a smart port as well as the automatic yards. It is also one of the first batch of 4-star Chinese Green Ports.

Mr. Fei Weijun introduced that the secretariat received more than ten applications from ports in APEC region in the applying period in 2016. With the evaluation of the GPAS Expert Committee and the approval of the APSN Council, seven applicants were awarded the APSN Green Port.

Ports from Hong KongChina; the Philippines; Vietnam and Chinese Taibei showed their interests in applying for the GPAS next year.

APSN will issue the Best Practice of APEC Green Port, which will share the idea, technology and experience of green port with port and port related industries. APSN will make great efforts to the development of green port in APEC regions.
